Fifteen percent of people and one out of every 4 children in Maine are food insecure. In order to publicize this fact we should start small by writing it in the school notice and making posters. If we want to get bigger maybe write it in the town line. If we get huge write it in the Kennebec Journal. These would inform people about hunger in Maine. That might spark something like Heifer International in Maine. Not just spark it, but push it forward.

To Do
I'm going to find out information about hunger in Maine. Then make a post how to publicize that there is hunger in Maine.(Schools, Community, State)
Farming in Schools?
The Question
Is farming taught in schools and should it be?
The Answer
Yes! 27% of Maine can't farm. That may seem small, but almost all of that percent of Main-ahs don't get enough to eat. Farming should be taught in schools because those people probably haven't had a good meal in a while. Farming is an alternative from McDonalds or Burger King. While farmed food doesn't make a five star meal, it still can make a four, and you know where it comes from. Your farm. Most people just buy junk that came from China, or where the meat gets processed again, and again. And again. I think that schools should teach farming. If schools taught farming then people wouldn't have to eat that.
The Reason
You may wonder why people would rather buy cheap food than farm there own food. The reason is: IT IS CHEAPER AND IT IS HARD! I don't blame those people at all. Who'd rather pay $4.50 for tomato seeds than get a tomato for 50 cents. The person that would rather pay $4.50 is
Why Mojo is Important
Why did My Uncle Create Mojo?
I think it's because of the fact that most of the mothers out there that are in poverty. Mojo stands for Moms and Jobs. I'm going to see my uncle this weekend and I'll write more after I talk to him about because I want to see his point of view. If you want to see more about it beforehand here is the link-
http:// www.getamericanmojo.com/
40% of mothers in the U.S. are in poverty and under the welfare line. Mojo is trying to change that.
Of course the cost is a little more expensive than the regular "Made in America", but it is going to a good cause and your money is going to stay in the U.S. Another is factor is that Mojo is a family owned business what with my uncle, his sister, Cara and his brother, Dare so it isn't a chain store like Walmart or Target. They have already been on CBS News and sold clothes to the Dave Matthews Band.
They pay their employees $10.00 per hour. While their at it why not throw in daycare for the kids and offer to pay tuition for college, right? Well, they did that, too! How can you help? Well, by just buying from Mojo or even telling people that might be interested.

Response
Germ Free World
Imagine a world without deadly germs. Awesome, right. This could have possible if the Europeans had not attacked the Americas. They didn't have deadly germs on there own, they got them. They still would have some germs but they would never get deadly germs. This would make them weak to germs but physically in good condition.
Empty Promises
(discussion)The Europeans also used empty promises to help them and the Incas did too. Empty promises are usually a park of war fare and that seems unfair.

The Importance of Horses
Horses were a very important part of Spanish history. They were the ones that frightened the Incas first, which caused them to be afraid of the Spaniards. The some of the Incas thought that the Spaniards were gods or something of the sort because of the horses they rode and the way they dressed.
The way they rode was significant, but watching the demonstration made me realize that it's not my favorite style of riding. I like western the best because it's the type where you feel free while your riding whereas Spanish riding has more control on the horse and it looked less comfortable. I felt like that person looked at home on a horse, but didn't exactly like the way he was riding. I'm not positive, of course, but I like the way I ride.
" I love riding, but I don't think I'd like this type of horse-back, what do you think?"
-Me
What type of riding do you like if you have ever ridden a horse?

Poverty
I would like to talk about poverty. Poverty is a big deal in America and all over the world. Most people in America think that the only people going through poverty are not in America, but in other places around the world. This is not true at all. Many people suffer from poverty in America. Most of the people that are going through it have different reasons, but people still need help. Some groups help poverty and some are Mojo, Sisters of the Planet, and United States Fund. With more help we could pull people out of poverty.

Domestic Animals
Domestic animals are animals that have been trained to either work, provide food, or provide clothes. Domestic animals are important to every farmer around the world. Unfortunately, to have a strong, quick domestic animal depends on where in the world you live. Domestic animals originated in Europe, Asia, and North Africa. As they were sent to other areas in the world, most failed to get to Papua New Guinea, Australia, and other areas around there. The only one being pigs. Since pigs only provide meat, farmers and gatherers from that region had to grow the crops themselves which took to long. People in this region still farm like this today, too.

This Weeks Reading: Guns Germs and Steel part 2
Write 1-2 paragraphs (or so) about some aspect of the reading, video, map or other medium that grabs your attention and you would like to discuss. I am not looking for you to summarize the source. Instead, I would like you to identify some theme or issue raised in the reading and interpret its significance. You need not deal with the source as a whole; in fact, you may want to focus on a small part of the larger source. You may wish to draw comparisons between the source of the day, or between today's and previous readings, video and other. You may wish to discuss how the source relates to some larger issue in the project (e.g.sustainability, personal issues, government).
Use the sections in orange above as a guide for writing.
Reaction Part 2
The second component of the reaction is the identification of some issue that can be suitable for discussion. This can be one or two sentences long, and it can be as simple as identifying a quote from one of the sources that you find illuminating (V) and interesting or questionable and briefly stating what important issue you see in the quote. You might also raise a point of comparison between readings, video or other media. The issue may be related to your topic discussion, though it need not be. Post these reactions after reading, viewing or experiencing the source.

Guns, Germs, and Steel Response
Significance of Domesticated Animals
Domesticated animals were are a big part of Human life thought time for different reasons. They used to be status power, food, clothes and brute strength. Now they are more pets. They are now more for fun than food. This is because agriculture has developed more.
Metal Vs. Stone
Most civilizations had stone so why was metal that important. It was diffidently in the long run for making complicated machines. But for simple ones. No! Take simple machines: wedge can be made by rock, inclined plain can be made by rock, and lever can be made by rock. Weapons and houses can be made by rock. Most simple things can be made by rocks.

Goats- Why are They Important
The Importance of Goats
Goats were just as important as sheep and cows were. They helped give milk to the Europeans as well as giving other things like wool and meat. They are still used in the same way today as they were then. New Guineans were really unfortunate not to get goats. With the animals and plants, that becomes an extremely amazing offer. Goats were very useful to humans and still are because they allow themselves to be with humans and, of course, they milk. They do all the things required for the standards that they have to meet to be domestic animals.
"I will be getting goats in June sometime so I really had a connection with this. I think it is important to talk about the agricultural point of view. Anything about farm animals I find interesting, and it's not just goats."

Utopia
Utopia
Machinery can cause a utopia or a dystopia. We chose which way to go with machinery. We decide if robots take us over. If we kept robots stupid they wouldn't do much. If we made them smart they might take us over. In order to have a Utopia in science and Tech. we need to find a middle ground for robots. The books mentioned 1984 and Brave New World are definitively science distopias. I know this cause my brother read 1984 and is reading Brave New World. And yes I did the Wiki reading. Here is the Wiki link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utopia
The definition of Utopia is an ideal place or state. My Utopia is a world without humans. If there no humans most animals would be happier (besides domestic animals). Not humans just disappeared leaving our buildings, houses, parks, radiation, etc. I mean humans never existed. It seams that we upset the cycle, killing animals for things beside food and destroying the earth. There would be hole in the atmosphere. A new race might evolve similar to humans but they might make smarter choices than we did.

Utopia
A Utopian World For A Woman
By Elizabeth Sugg
By Elizabeth Sugg
A Utopian world for every female would be not having to worry about how they look and still feel beautiful inside. Women world-wide could have more privileges, go through less stress, and have every right to do something even if they could not do it in our world today. Also, only a some of the problems can be cured by yoga, but still there is nothing that can cure all the stress a woman has to go through. If they could dress they way they want, eat what the want to, and do what they want, our world would be perfect. Just 60-70 years ago a girl had to go through a lot to find a college that excepted girls. If a woman had less stress, and if I were in charge of Earth, I would most definitely change it's name to "Utopia".
What's Behind the Burger
What's Behind the Burger
by Elizabeth Sugg
3/14/12
Burgers may look delicious on ads for McDonald's, Burger King, or else where, you may think they taste good, too. But everything to get to that burger isn't the most delicious process. First, you have to toucher the cows by putting a whole plethora in a small area all crammed together. Then, you have to chop up all the meat inhumanely. Next, you have to get all the grains that are sprayed with pesticides and herbicides. Then, process the grain until it's as white as fresh snow. Then, you have to process the pickles, and cheese, and mustard, and ketchup, and everything else you like on your burger. Next, you make patty shapes with the meat, buns with the grain, put the condiments in their packages, and ship it to all over the world. Finally, when you get it in the greasy paper and you open it, and it looks like it just got stepped on. Do you really want to be eating that?
Utopia
Utopia
A perfect Utopian society in my eyes would be an island far from money problems or poverty. Everyone would have a job that they wanted and no one would be unpretty or not perfect. The political level would be way less than what is is now and people would find there was a more secure government that we could rely more than what we do in the U.S. The people on the island of Utopia would have it good. There would be problems, but they wouldn't be the same.
Feminism
In a Utopian world women would not worry about how they look going out or even staying at home. They would feel good about themselves no matter how beautiful the person sitting next to them is. They could get themselves all dressed up but no one would feel less pretty than someone else. (That has nothing to do with feminism, but I felt that's important in a Utopian society.)
On a different note, it's sad that women aren't exactly treated the same. For example, it's usually girls that are abused the most. It happens to men but, I've heard more case where the women it abused. I don't know why that is but, it is just the same. I've read a book named Dream of Night that a single mother gets abused by her boyfriend. The little girl, no more than 11 or 12 gets wound into it and Slade the mother's boyfriend abuses the little girl. Shiloh (the little girl) ends up getting cigarette marks in her shoulder not once but six times! I know that's fiction but, things like that really do happen every day.
Another thing is that there has never been a women president. I think that's our fault because we don't apply ourselves as much as we should but, still I think some of the blame should go to certain men that are just to narrow-minded to except that we are just as good as them.
In the article on Wikipedia it named a lot of authors like Doris Lessing and I couldn't really follow that but, please note that I did look at it and I really did try to follow it the best I could. Thank you!

Civilization - Elephants
Elephants
Elephants are a topic that caught my eye. I think it would be interesting to try and breed elephants. I bet we could do it, only, like John Green said, they would take forever to breed because they take 22 months to have one baby. I find that quite interesting, actually. Anyway, I think that elephants would be useful to the human race because they are very intellectual and big. Thank you!
" Why you gotta be pregnant for 22 months?!" Quote made John Green.

What is a Civilization
Elephant Secret Societies
The secret elephant societies is bit far fetched but if that did happen it could link to robots. This is because robots might try to take over the world. He talked about elephants doing that. the elephants had limitations by having only one kid after 22 months of pregnancy. Robots would also have limitations the don't reproduce so there population would slowly decline.
The Great Bath
The great bath was a huge bath that was most used for spiritual cleansing. The people of that city's lives were likely centered around it. what are lives today and what are lives in the future will be centered around is the internet. this is getting smaller just like bathes get smaller.

Industry experts have said that electronic health records could generate huge savings — as much as $80 billion a year, according to a RAND Corporation estimate. The promise of cost savings has been a major justification for billions of dollars in federal spending to encourage doctors to embrace digital health record.

Preschoolers with Too Many Cavities: The Lecture!
You want to know what I think of dental hygene? I think too many people don't take it seriously and they have to get root canals at age 2 like Devon Koester a preschooler that young who has a mouthful of cavities. It's amazing that someone at age 2 is in a 37 year old position. The number of preschoolers that require expensive, not to mention extensive, is way out of hand. " We have had a huge amount of preschoolers in the surgical room" said Dr. Jonathan Shenkin. " We have been treating young kids sooner and more aggressively earlier.
Thank you!

Our World: Fashion
Lifestyle:
Fashion
In 2040, we will have a total new look on things. Especially fashion. We will consider giving more clothing to charity and making our own clothes. We'll still have clothing stores, but they will go out of business in approximately 10 years. To make our clothes we will have to build more fabric and sewing machine stores. That will take less money than buying our clothes. We will be able to make a wedding dress for $150.00 instead of buying one for $1050.00 or so. Like I said before, we will have a total new look on fashion in 2040.

The Mac book Air invention is a sign that cumputers are getting thinner and smaller. This will continue. We've had ipads and iphones these smalll computers still store the same memory as a huge computer memory. Expect those things to get smaller still. Graphine can be one atom thick and still transmit energy. That will allow things to get thinner.

Our World in 2040- Community & Lifestyles
Community & Lifestyles: Gas and Fashion
Personal- Happiness/Career : I would be happy because I would know the world was a better place (hopefully) because of something I did or said or even stood up for. I would hope I had kids that I could read to and do all the things that my parents did for me. That would make me truly happy. Even just knowing that I made a little difference by making them know what's right and what's wrong. Because in the end it's not about how many people admire you or how many people post that they like your hair , it's knowing that what you did was right and you're proud of it.So many people now are really concerned about having the perfect hair or wanting the newest clothes, things along that line. That's all fine and there's nothing wrong with it only so many people are letting it take over their lives because they think for some reason that if they don't they won't make friends or just won't be good enough for anyone else. I know how they feel because I was like that once upon a time. A lot of people are insecure about that and they shouldn't be because everyone's perfect just because everyone says that nobody is. My career would be something that makes me happy like singing or fashion. If I enjoy it and it's good for me I'll try to get it as my job. Chase my dreams, you know?
Communtity- There will be schools that don't have budget cuts and gas pumps that have the gas price moving slower than the actual gas that's being pumped. People will help other people that just need to get something out of the car or need help getting across the road. The cost of penny candy won't be a dollar and people who had to drop out of school or have medical problems that are poor will be able to breathe freely.
Lifestyles- People will drive around in hovercrafts and eat all the things that we do now like tacos, pizza, and ice cream. Fashion will be a big thing and everyone would have a signature look. For example, someone might wear some type of food everyday or someone else would always wear blue. Planes would be a thing of the past. Everyone will have their own personal jet. Schools would have their own movie day every 2 weeks. Nobody would have the same name so everyone would be unique in distincint ways.
Thank you!!!

What is a Civilization?
This week we will continue our Mini Society project with a study of civilizations. Your posts this week should be reactions (see suggestions below) to the following videos:
Crash Course: World History (The Agricultural Revolution)
Crash Course: World History ( The Indus Valley)
Crash Course World History (Mesopotamia)
How to write a reaction
Blog Post Reaction Part 1
Write 1-2 paragraphs (or so) about some aspect of the reading, video, map or other medium that grabs your attention and you would like to discuss. I am not looking for you to summarize the source. Instead, I would like you to identify some theme or issue raised in the reading and interpret (V) its significance (V).
Remember Media: Proper blog form is to have hyperlinks and pictures or video in each blog post if possible. Please follow fair use policies or Creative Commons. I suggest you seek your media here at http://labs.creativecommons.org/demos/search/ for images.

Personal/Technogoly
Personal Technology
Technology
In communications humans will probably get rid of snail mail and Email will become the primary source of communication. Telephones will most likely not need number you just say the name of the person you want to call, and it will call them. home phones will go out of business since cell phones are more portable. In inventions artificial intelligence and robotics will grow there will be Robots doing chores that are difficult for humans. There most likely be a change in making energy. Oil will be gone so people will find knew ways to create energy. Things like cameras, cumpputers, and cell phones will get smaller. In moral issues People will become lazier because the say “Let the robot do it”. This will be a problem because people won’t have to do things and they won’t get exercise. Cloning and genetic engineering will also become a problem. People will get the gender kid they want which in a lot of places will be a boy. This will make the human race dwindle.
Personal
Happiness will be different because some happiness will be virtual. For fun people are not climbing mountains with all the cold there going to climbing mountains virtually. Careers will be different there won’t be as many restaurant jobs because there won’t be many restaurants. This is because people will eat a pill and be fine. hard labor will stop because robots will take over those jobs.

Organic Foods vs. Processed Foods
Organic Foods vs. Processed Foods
The biggest problem in the world is obesity and processed foods. When you ask someone why they eat McDonald's food or go to the Super Market and get mini hotdogs wrapped in pancakes, what would they say? Well, I researched and found that 31 precent more people eat more processed food than fresh food. That's like saying, there are approximately 307,006,550 people in the USA, and more than half of it only eat processed food.
This is a picture of the percentage of people that are obese in the USA in the year 2006. Notice that there are no states that are white, light blue, blue, and only two are dark blue!

Architecture
Sustainable architecture should be growing. We are wasting lots of resources and destroying the environment. Nonsustainable homes use 72% of electicity, use 40% of electricty, and 13.6% of portable water consumption. This can be fixed if people use sustainable homes and buildings. Sustainable homes release 35% less C02,40% less water consumption, and 70% less solid waste then regular homes. To make your home sustainable. Use triple paned wndows wich make windows more insulated, use of solar pannels, wind turbines, and geothermel will reduce energy use. Sustainable material are recycled materials and mud brick make homes sustainable.

Unemployment
The biggest problem in America is unemployment. Unemployment creates homelessness, poverty, welfare, and the list keeps going and going. Some ways to stop this are donating to charity or even staring your own charity.(1) Since I was born the unemployment rate has gone up in Maine from 3.2% to 8.5%. That means a little less than 5% of people don't have jobs. This problem also effects kids in many ways. How are they supposed to have money to go to school if their parents don't have the money to pay the fare? There are all these wonderfully smart children that can't get passed elementary school if their parents can't scrape together the money. So anyway, unemployment hurts people. It may even hurt you. Please help to protect your family and anyone else who needs it. Thank you!
