Food insecurity in Maine

Fifteen percent of people and one out of every 4 children in Maine are food insecure. In order to publicize this fact we should start small by writing it in the school notice and making posters. If we want to get bigger maybe write it in the town line. If we get huge write it in the Kennebec Journal. These would inform people about hunger in Maine. That might spark something like Heifer International in Maine. Not just spark it, but push it forward.

To Do

I'm going to find out information about hunger in Maine. Then make a post how to publicize that there is hunger in Maine.(Schools, Community, State)

Farming in Schools?

The Question
Is farming taught in schools and should it be?
The Answer
Yes! 27% of Maine can't farm. That may seem small, but almost all of that percent of Main-ahs don't get enough to eat. Farming should be taught in schools because those people probably haven't had a good meal in a while. Farming is an alternative from McDonalds or Burger King. While farmed food doesn't make a five star meal, it still can make a four, and you know where it comes from. Your farm. Most people just buy junk that came from China, or where the meat gets processed again, and again. And again. I think that schools should teach farming. If schools taught farming then people wouldn't have to eat that.
The Reason
You may wonder why people would rather buy cheap food than farm there own food. The reason is: IT IS CHEAPER AND IT IS HARD! I don't blame those people at all. Who'd rather pay $4.50 for tomato seeds than get a tomato for 50 cents. The person that would rather pay $4.50 is

Why Mojo is Important

Why did My Uncle Create Mojo?
I think it's because of the fact that most of the mothers out there that are in poverty. Mojo stands for Moms and Jobs. I'm going to see my uncle this weekend and I'll write more after I talk  to him about because I want to see his point of view.  If you want to see more about it beforehand here is the link-
                       http:// www.getamericanmojo.com/
40% of mothers in the U.S. are in poverty and under the welfare line. Mojo is trying to change that.
Of course the cost is a little more expensive than the regular "Made in America", but it is going to a good cause and your money is going to stay in the U.S. Another is factor is that Mojo is a family owned business what with my uncle, his sister, Cara and his brother, Dare so it isn't a chain store like Walmart or Target. They have already been on CBS News and sold clothes to the Dave Matthews Band.
They pay their employees $10.00 per hour. While their at it why not throw in daycare for the kids and offer to pay tuition for college, right? Well, they did that, too! How can you help? Well, by just buying from Mojo or even telling people that might be interested.

Response

Germ Free World
Imagine a world without deadly germs. Awesome, right. This could have possible if the Europeans had not attacked the Americas. They didn't have deadly germs on there own, they got them. They still would have some germs but they would never get deadly germs. This would make them weak to germs but physically in good condition.

Empty Promises
(discussion)The Europeans also used empty promises to help them and the Incas did too. Empty promises are usually a park of war fare and that seems unfair.

Guns, Germs, & Steel Response 2

                                            The Importance of Horses
Horses were a very important part of Spanish history. They were the ones that frightened the Incas first, which caused them to be afraid of the Spaniards. The some of the Incas thought that the Spaniards were gods or something of the sort because of the horses they rode and the way they dressed.
The way they rode was significant, but watching the demonstration made me realize that it's not my favorite style of riding. I like western the best because it's the type where you feel free while your riding whereas Spanish riding has more control on the horse and it looked less comfortable. I felt like that person looked at home on a horse, but didn't exactly like the way he was riding. I'm not positive, of course, but I like the way I ride.
" I love riding, but I don't think I'd like this type of horse-back, what do you think?"
                      -Me
What type of riding do you like if you have ever ridden a horse?

Guns, Germs, and Steel 2 Response

Poverty

I would like to talk about poverty. Poverty is a big deal in America and all over the world. Most people in America think that the only people going through poverty are not in America, but in other places around the world. This is not true at all. Many people suffer from poverty in America. Most of the people that are going through it have different reasons, but people still need help. Some groups help poverty and some are Mojo, Sisters of the Planet, and United States Fund. With more help we could pull people out of poverty.

Guns, Germs, and Steel Response 1

 Domestic Animals
Domestic animals are animals that have been trained to either work, provide food, or provide clothes. Domestic animals are important to every farmer around the world. Unfortunately, to have a strong, quick domestic animal depends on where in the world you live. Domestic animals originated in Europe, Asia, and North Africa. As they were sent to other areas in the world, most failed to get to Papua New Guinea, Australia, and other areas around there. The only one being pigs. Since pigs only provide meat, farmers and gatherers from that region had to grow the crops themselves which took to long. People in this region still farm like this today, too.

Thinking outside the box

If there are hungry people in Maine, why do we not have programs like HI? Do you think they would help? Write a short reply.

This Weeks Reading: Guns Germs and Steel part 2

Write 1-2 paragraphs (or so) about some aspect of the reading, video, map or other medium that grabs your attention and you would like to discuss. I am not looking for you to summarize the source. Instead, I would like you to identify some theme or issue raised in the reading and interpret its significance. You need not deal with the source as a whole; in fact, you may want to focus on a small part of the larger source. You may wish to draw comparisons between the source of the day, or between today's and previous readings, video and other. You may wish to discuss how the source relates to some larger issue in the project (e.g.sustainability, personal issues, government).

Use the sections in orange above as a guide for writing.

Reaction Part 2

The second component of the reaction is the identification of some issue that can be suitable for discussion. This can be one or two sentences long, and it can be as simple as identifying a quote from one of the sources that you find illuminating (V) and interesting or questionable and briefly stating what important issue you see in the quote. You might also raise a point of comparison between readings, video or other media. The issue may be related to your topic discussion, though it need not be. Post these reactions after reading, viewing or experiencing the source.
